Pieter (Petrus) Clouwet (Clouet), discendente da una famiglia fiamminga di artisti, nacque ad Anversa il 9 Aprile del 1629 ed ivi morì il 29 Aprile del 1970. Fu allievo di Theodoor van Merlen II (1609–72) e nel 1645 divenne un maestro nella Gilda di San Luca di Anversa, di cui è stato preside dal 1666-1669. Nel 1652 sposò Jacqueline Bouttats che era imparentata con il celebre incisore di Anversa Gaspard-Martin Bouttats (1648-1695 o 1703), la loro figlia sposò il incisore Michiel Cabbaye (circa 1660-1722), che ha lavorato in partnership con il suocero. Pieter era soprattutto un incisore che riproduceva copia di opere di artisti come Nicolaes Berchem, Abraham van Diepenbeek, Anthony van Dyck, Pieter van Lint, Erasmus Quellinus e Simon de Vos. Ha fatto incisioni per Anne Hermans (deceduta nel 1666), vedova di dell'incisore anversano Guillaume Collaert (circa 1610-prima del 1666), e stampe devozionali per AltÖtting, luogo di pellegrinaggio in Baviera. Egli è più conosciuto per le sue incisioni da opere di Rubens, anche paesaggi, ritratti, soggetti religiosi o allegorie. Descendant from a Flemish family of artists, Pieter (Petrus) Clouwet (Clouet) was born in Antwerp April 9, 1629 and there died April 29, 1670). He was a pupil of Theodoor van Merlen II (1609–72) and in 1645 became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke, of which he was dean from 1666 to 1669. In 1652 he married Jacqueline Bouttats, who was related to the Antwerp engraver Gaspard-Martin Bouttats (1648–1695 or 1703); their daughter married the engraver Michiel Cabbaye (c. 1660–1722), who worked in partnership with his father-in-law. Pieter was primarily a reproductive engraver, copying the works of such artists as Nicolaes Berchem, Abraham van Diepenbeek, Anthony van Dyck, Pieter van Lint, Erasmus Quellinus and Simon de Vos. He made engravings for Anne Hermans (d 1666), the widow of the Antwerp engraver Guillaume Collaert (c. 1610–before 1666), and devotional prints for AltÖtting, a pilgrimage site in Bavaria. He is best known for his engravings after Rubens, whether landscapes, portraits, religious subjects or allegories. Pieter Clouwet also engraved a series of Apostles represented as statues, which were based on Rubens’s example. He had a number of pupils, including Jan Frans de Ruelles (1662-1749).
